What you see is what you focus on

Let me ask you some quick questions. Are you a Toyota fan? If yes then have you ever wonder why is there so many Honda Civic on the road? Chances are, you won’t. You will notice Toyota Vios or Altis or whatever Toyotas but you will not be aware of the Honda cars around you.

Why?

Because that is what you focus on. That is what your mind is looking at and whatever your mind is looking at, will influence what your eyes are looking at.

Don’t believe me? Now, go back on the road and see if you can notice any Honda Civic cars. I’m sure you will be able to see a lot of them. Er…of course, if you’re somewhere in a dense forest and you can see a lot of Honda Civic cars, you better start praying hard. :T

This shows that our mind is a very powerful thing and it can actually decide what are the things you pay attention to, and filter the rest. This happens in our daily life too. Some people always claim that they do not have the best of things in life, and others do have. But the thing is, everyone has the best things in life except that these things do differ from one person to another.

As long as you set your mind to focus on the good things in life, I don’t see why you can’t be happy because there are just so many of those things around us.

Remember, if you keep focusing on other people’s “fortune” and not yours, then you will never learn to appreciate the things around you. The concentration and the focus are not there. Or maybe, they are there, but the target is not the right one.

So start changing your focus. See things differently. Stop focusing on what good stuff other people have and start focusing on what good stuff YOU have.

p/s…. this thing can be applied to your work too. If you have too many tasks, the one you focus on will get done easily, as compared to other tasks. And less mistakes too.

  1. Ever heard the term people only see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear? This perceptual “error” is compounded when people develop a habit of reading or listening only to things that agree with their point of view. For example once you’ve settled on a certain brand of newspaper or TV channel, you are not likely to change them. So instead of enlarging your view, these things create a stronger bias.

They say we make our own realities and I find a lot of truth in that.

Which reminds me of a question that once popped up in Dexter’s Laboratory cartoon. If someone chopped down a tree in the forest and you weren’t around to see it, did it really happen? :D

You have a good point there. Some people believe too much in a single source of information, that they actually create a stronger bias w/o them knowing it. And if one day, this single source of information is being regarded as a fake, these individuals might go into a state of denial and fight for it :P They don’t want people to say that they have been following the wrong guy.

  3. everybody creates their own realities ..

the question is , are you humble enough to admit that your reality is wrong ? are you ready to learn again ?

yeap yeap , that is the problem of growing wiser and smarter :)

There is no point asking someone to appreciate things and see the things differently , when you know they will answer

“everyone is entitle to their own opinions” ..LOL ..oh another favorite

u know what? ur commentluv (blog’s last post) attracted my attention more. LOL.

Yea, there are people who love to live in their own fantasies, ignoring everyone’s words/opinions/advice/suggestions. They will just use those 2 lines you mentioned. But then again, i do use “everyone has his/her own opinions” at times esp when i encounter people who will never listen. :) It’s equivalent to me saying “yea, you’re hopeless, i know that. no point talking to a wall”.

Whether reality is wrong or not, is quite subjective. There are things that we believe strongly in..things like our passions and dreams. For some people, our dreams and passions don really make sense to them, but for us, they can be the source of our energy. The difference here is that, one should learn how to “switch” and not just stick in a single path with no result for his entire life. :)
