Susan Boyle: End of dream?

with 6 comments

1 of my favourite TV shows has finally come to an end. I’m not talking about American Idol. I’m talking about Britain’s Got Talent. This year, the BGT competition has been very popular due to one person – Susan Boyle.

I believe you should’ve known who is Susan Boyle by now, unless you’ve been living in another world. She is the 47-year-old lady from Scotland who is jobless, single, and has a worse luck than many of us. And yet, she has a big dream – to perform in front of a lot of people. Try Google for her name. I bet you can come out with thousands of search results. Or try to look for her Youtube video too. She can really sing!

The reason Susan Boyle has become one of the most popular names in the whole world just after 1 performance is because many people see themselves in her – undiscovered, hopeful, and with a big dream. They put all their hope on her shoulders – if she can win this, why not everyone else?

But she didn’t win the competition. It’s not that she did not perform well during the final. She did. But the thing is, people got tired of her.

And that is the sad thing about our society. When we see ourselves in someone or something, we praise the person and lift him/her up into the sky…and some even pray the person like a god or savior. But once things turn sour or boring, we kick the same “savior” aside and leave him to rot by the roadside. Why? Because we’re tired of the person and he has nothing else to give us. Nothing interesting anymore. Just like an old toy which has become boring.

This kind of thing might not happen to Susan Boyle alone. In fact, it can happen to anyone or anything that is popular. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about it because that is the power of the society (and in some cases, the media). What we can do though, is for ourselves – to face the challenges, taunts, burdens, etc bravely. Face them head on. Because it is OUR dream that we are chasing, not other people’s dream.

To Susan Boyle and everyone else who is in her situation – be brave. Know the reason why you are being so brave for, the reason why you step out from your shell and into the limelight, the reason why you are willing to work day and night, and the reason why you should ignore the rest of the world with their negative comments. Nobody can stop you from calling your journey “end of dream” except for yourselves.

And for those people and the media who love to make people’s life a big mess……go find other better things to do.

  1. I think Susan did the best she could but someone else was simply better. And Diversity really kicked ass. Awesome!

Well its not just Susan Boyle who gets left by the wayside when the party’s over. Its everyone. Does anyone even remember last year’s BGT winner George Sampson? Or last year’s American Idol winner? :)

They say the higher you fly, the harder you fall. Everyone made Susan Boyle into what she was – us, Youtube, CNN, the Daily Mirror, etc. Everyone chased her till she was way up there, and then the wind died down and she fell to the ground. No wind ever blows forever.

We do the same thing to share prices don’t we – chase them up on mere rumor and then when the imaginary floor disappears, it falls, Nothing strange, its just the way physics work.

And that is why I don’t crave to be famous, ’cause I know that becoming unfamous is not fun. :D

Oh ya, Diversity indeed kicked ass with their performance for the final. LOL. If they were in China, someone might’ve said they are abusing the 2 flying kids :P

George Sampson? I don’t even know who is that !! I only remember the prev winner Paul Potts.

Yea, the higher you are, the harder you will fall. That’s why some people who have been CEOs or the C-class executives, failed to climb up again after retrenchments. Most people just cannot survive such fall.

Let’s hope Susan will be better soon. She really can sing, tat’s for sure. :) And if she wants to chase after her dreams, she should be brave to face such people n media.

  5. For Susan Boyle, I think it must be like someone striking a lottery after years of slogging in the mud. But sudden fame, just like instant wealth can be damaging if one is not prepared for it. Her quiet boring living room suddenly becomes an airport transit lounge. She’s now become public property. Fame can be harder to handle than wealth. She’ll have to say goodbye to privacy. Everyone now has a comment to make about her. (that includes me… :D )

Mm, not to say lottery. I wouldn’t say someone who has a dream and hoping that 1 day it would come true, is equivalent to someone who keeps buying TOTO even though he is damn poor. :P

And without her talents, really, do you think she can even make it pass the prelim?

I do agree that there are a lot of people who don’t like her (face…yes..most people love her song, but not her look), but all I can say to her is ….it is her dream that she is pursuing, not others. It’s the same thing with everything. For example, if you are a very reputable person in blogosphere, or your profession, there will surely be some people out there who are not happy with you and try to bring u down.

    We just cannot satisfy everyone.
