Manage your people differently

with 4 comments

I was talking with a friend the other day on the topic of people management. He’s a team leader and has to manage around 5 to 10 people (mostly fresh graduates or those with 1 or 2 years of working experience). He told me that he’s having quite a difficult time since some of his subordinates are pretty stubborn, and some are quite “unique”.

Hopefully I wont become a sacrifice for my leader/manager in the future :D

Well, people management is never easy because everyone is unique and requires different kind of management. What I told my friend was to observe and learn more about their characteristics and their goals. Also, as a leader, he needs to be fair, flexible, open-minded and never discriminates. For example, one of his team members (who is a very good programmer) is a loner and hardly joins the team for lunch or outing. The other team members find it difficult to communicate and work with him. But does that mean my friend should penalize him? And does that mean this guy is not valuable for the team?

No, this guy should not be penalized and he is still a valuable member of the team due to his skills. The thing my friend should do is to manage him differently and give him his own space to work in. His existence might ruin the team spirit but there are still things which he can do – maybe those assignments which only need one resource/person.

But that is just 1 type of people that a team lead might need to handle. Honestly speaking, there are many other more problematic type of people out there. Some will only talk without doing work. Some will act smart in front of you. Some will talk bad about other team members. So on and so forth.

Again, different people different kind of handling. And that is why managing people is an art in itself. Last but not least, remember never to discriminate people for being different. :)

Hope it helps.

  1. There is a developmental aspect in managing people, especially if they’re new to the job market. Its the manager’s job to mold the team members attitudes to one that’s good for the team. Sometimes its like managing a basket of rattlesnakes. Not easy. But then it is what separates the men from the boys. You can and should manage staff according to their personalities and put more effort on weaker ones and less on the stronger ones. Just be careful it doesn’t slide into accusations of favoritism.

Managing people is never easy since most of the time, their personalities will be quite different. And it’s also pretty difficult to be the perfect ‘lead’ or ‘boss’ because no matter what you do, there will be someone who is not pleased. :) We just have to make sure the majority is pleased. :D

  3. I’m not sure if you guys heard of micro-message stuff. Basically if you think someone has a problem, he is going to have a problem. So to manage them, you can not perceive them to be a problamatic person or else you will not able to fix him. Just my 2 cents.

It’s all about the mindset and prejudices. As a leader, it’s very important not to have prejudices towards any of the team member even though some of them could be ‘problematic’. :P Because once you have prejudices, even if the person has changed for the better, you might not be able to see it. :D
