Is your willpower strong enough?

I’m currently reading the book “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin S. Sharma. It’s quite a typical motivational book and the content has been mentioned in other motivational books before. But it is still quite helpful especially the part where the book talks about willpower and how most people could not get what they wanted due to their lack of willpower.

I find that to be very true. I used to hate going to gym. Why? Because it’s boring and I was just lazy. I know it’s good for my health but I was just lazy. But when I forced myself (using my willpower) to go regularly, I find it to be not that difficult after all.

Also, during company meeting or team discussion, I often see people arguing or interrupting each other’s conversation just to prove a point. And I find that annoying even though I used to be like that too. But I’ve since changed myself. I used my willpower to control myself from interrupting other people’s conversation. Observe what others have to say and only voice out when it’s necessary. It actually requires a lot of willpower just to stay quiet.

And just recently, I told my friends I am on a cholesterol watch – I need to stop eating unhealthy food and start a healthy diet. They tried to influence me but my NO is a very firm NO. I am glad that I have a strong willpower to prevent myself from all those nice-looking food (though during the company pot luck, I have nothing to eat and was forced to eat some unhealthy food).

Maybe to some of you, it is not a big deal and some might even give up without trying. I’ve heard people saying “My willpower is not as strong as yours”, “I won’t try that, I will die”, “I know the economy is bad but I just could not help myself …I’ve spent a lot just now”, etc. All these things can be avoided if you are strong-willed. And the good news is, everyone can have a strong willpower. It’s just a matter of whether you want to practice it or not.

So stop complaining about how bad life is treating you or how low your salary is or how useless you are. Start gaining control of your life and having a strong willpower will definitely help you.

Good luck!

  1. I have low will power… But I am controlling my will power from ever touching that PS3 or… that lovely new camera lens..

Anyway, the book is fantastic. It teaches you that your mind needs to be worked on besides your body too.

  2. Any tips on how to build willpower?

  3. @ Angie
I think it’s okay to buy things you like once in a while. But for me, I would try to earn that extra income FIRST before buying something extra.

By doing something which you’ve ‘postponed’ for a while – like waking up at 7am rather than 8am. And do it everyday, making it a habit. Also, do the things that you fear. You fear to do something because you don’t have the willpower to overcome them. So train yourself to have a strong enough willpower to do those things.

Repeat it, and soon you will find yourself having that strong willpower than most people don’t. :D
