These 2 questions, I am sure, are 2 of the most common questions asked by people in their 20s and 30s…including myself. I believe it is easy to find what you are good at – whatever you like to do (during your childhood), which actually attracted a lot of compliments from your family and other adults. That, can be considered your talent(s).

But all these talents and interests are not that useful when it comes to our ever-materialistic world. With the ever-increasing inflation rate and the ever-consistent salary/bonuses (well…it can be BETTER or WORSE….and since a recession is coming….i think it’ll be the latter)…things are not going to be easy when it comes to $$$. Let me give you an example of a conversation between me and a friend.

Miss L : Alvin, I’m losing interest in my job…it’s so boring…

Alvin : What do you think you’re good at?

Miss L : I don’t know. But is watching HK drama considered a skill? I doubt right. I don’t think I can earn a living by doing that!

Alvin : Well, you can always start a web site doing reviews for HK drama…and once it is GOOD enough, you can think of directing people where to rent or buy cheap HK drama. You might be able to earn some comission from there. But it’s not going to be easy since there are already something similar out there.

Miss L : So what am I going to do?

Alvin : Be more specialized? Like …HK drama on crime and investigation? I believe if you really want to do it, there are plenty of case studies for you to look at. But are you actually willing to let go of your $ 5000 a month salary you have now?

Miss L : That’s a bit difficult. I doubt I can survive without the $ 5000.

Alvin : Then do it as a part time. Go full-time once you are able to get a steady income out of it. I know it sounds easy but it’s not THAT easy. Well, at least I guess you should try it out the things that you think you’re good at. If it doesn’t work, just throw it away and find another one. But bear in mind that it might not bring you as much money as your $ 5000 a month job.

You see, I believe there are more money making opportunities out there than the number of people attempting to grab such opportunities. But there are few questions which you need to ask before taking up these opportunities….. Are you willing to take a risk? Do you think you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur…and be your own boss? and the most important…Is this business opportunity really really meant for you? No point going for something which will help u earn money….but you’re not interested in it…and you might end up giving up halfway.

By giving up halfway…you might lose more money than you could possibly imagined. So, try for something which might not earn you a lot of $$…but something you are willing to put your heart and soul into it. Make it a part of you…. I think it’ll bring you happiness and satisfaction that money might not be able to buy.

At least, that’s what I think. :)

  3. Life is full of choices if you look at it… sometime too many choices which made us more confusing and high chances to made pick a wrong choice … hehehe…

Anyway, you will miss what you have when you don’t have it.. Just be cautious and make a right choice for yourself… once you have made the choice… don’t look back eh! Move forward whether it’s a good choice or bad choice… Hehehe… i had made my big move thot, good choice?… yet to know :-p

I prefer to have more choices than no choice at all. :P How often do we hear people complaining about their life and their misfortunes because they have “no choice”? :)

And most motivational gurus will say …. there’s no right or wrong choices in this world. it all depends on how you see them :P

  5. At the end of the day, it’s still about putting food on the table. So there really isn’t a choice after all. If there is a choice, I would have chosen a life of lazying around on a beautiful beach every day for the rest of my life. :D

I still want to believe there are choices that we can make in life..no such thing as “no choice”.

And i wouldn’t want to be lazying around on a beautiful beach…that’s such a waste to my life. :) prefer to do something more beneficial and something which can contribute more to our society.

  7. herm .. agreed. there’s always this period of time in life, that we lost our direction or interest in almost everything. too absorb into the routine, i guess. just as you’d mentioned, interest is what drive us, but double the effort is a necessity. my my .. what a difficult question to answer !!

sometimes it’s frustrating…but sometimes, it’s interesting and challenging as well. but ‘doubling the effort’ is quite subjective at times

  9. I think you have to examin what it means to ‘have a choice’. You have to have the ability to bring about what you chose. It does not make sense to chose to live on the moon. You can say it but it is not a choice you can make. Living your life on a sandy beach is in the same catagory. To chose it would lead to you distruction, you would starv to death. My point here is that you can only chose those life paths over which you some energy or power to achieve.

When I said “we have always have a choice” does not mean that both choices are good ones. For example, if one keeps complaining about being underpaid, one can choose to leave or to stay quiet, or to discuss with the boss about the salary ……but most people would opt for the first 2 options. It’s not that they don’t have that choice…its that they do not want to take it because it seems to be the worse choice for them.

But that still don’t mean you don’t hav a choice , because you do! just that u don want to take it.

Going to live on the moon is not impossible. it’s jst that to u, it’s not feasible. does that mean it is impossible for u to achieve tat? Nope. u can, if u really really work for it. even if u cannot 100% achieve it, maybe u will achieve 30% or 40% of it. aim for the star, so u aim on the moon.

  11. Still a matter of perception. You might think it’s a choice, but if your wife is pressuring you, or you need money to take care of your parents and quitting is just too risky a move to make, it sure does look like you don’t have a choice at all. Even if you do. :D

i still prefer to think i have choices that i can choose from :) it makes me think more positively rather than having no choice at all — which sounds rather hopeless
