Mr. Doctor, people go to you because you care

with 6 comments

And not because you are oblivious to their presence. This, is something I found out when I visited a clinic few years ago.

It was a dark and cold night (sounds like Stephen King’s story?). It has been raining for several days now….and, i caught cold at 7pm….and then fever at 10pm. =_= So i went to the 24 hours clinic in Petaling Jaya to seek consultation…and hopefully I can go to work the next day after the medication (yea, i was VERY dedicated).

I waited only 30 minutes for my turn….and there were at least 6 patients ahead of me. So i went in and before i even sat down….

the doctor said “Do you want a MC?”.

I said “No”.

He said “Then what’s the problem?”.

I said “High fever”..

He said “OK, i’ll give you some medicine for that.”

…and that’s it.

That’s the end of the story between me and that clinic. I’ve never bothered to return to the clinic since then. I’m sure most patients wouldn’t go back unless they are forced to.

Fact is, people seek your services hoping that you will care for them. True, there ARE times when we go to a doctor for MC :P but most of the time, it’s because we’re sick. And when we’re sick, we expect you, the person we are paying, to care for us.

If you don’t believe what I said, try observe all the clinics in your area. The doctor who spends his time with the patients…asking them what is the problem, what they should do and what they shouldn’t do, tend to be more popular with the patients if compared to …say…a doctor who only gives MC or gives medicine without even bother to show that he cares.

It’s the same with other industries as well. People buy IPOD, Nike, LV, etc for the “feeling” that it brings. But that’s a different topic altogether.

What’s your opinion on this? Do you prefer a doctor who doesn’t seem to care much…or do you prefer a doctor who might not give you the best medicine (or the most effective ones) but cares a lot about your well-being?

p/s….mmm, i notice something……i tend to talk a lot about doctors nowadays. hahahaha

Why do people like to compare salary?

with 20 comments

Today, i offended another friend of mine – an old friend. Here’s our conversation in Yahoo Messenger:

B: Hey, how are you?

Me: Not good, share jatuh la.

B: Oh, didn’t check for some time, been very busy.

Me: Oh, ok ok. I also quite busy.

B: May if i ask you how much is your pay?

Me: er…why do u want to know?

B: Because i think i want to ask my boss for the same salary. I think i’m underpaid.

Me: But you’re in finance industry, and i’m in IT…completely different. How can you compare? Furthermore, everyone will say he is underpaid even though the person is doing nothing and getting paid 10k per month. Hahah. Anyway, if you really want to know, try asking your colleagues or those in your industry. More accurate.

B: Why you are always so serious 1?

Me: Wah, you asked me serious question, of course i have to give you serious reply. You don’t expect me to fool around and said “where got underpaid..mine only 2k laaaa, worse than you laaa”. You won’t believe right?

B: F*****, if you don’t want to tell, then don’t tell la, so rude for what!?

Me: Er…i tell you lo…my salary is **** but bonus < 1 month per year compared to yours which is 6 months per year……see? i really don’t see a point

B Sign Out.

———————-

Aih…donno why nowadays some of my friends are soooooooo stressed up. =_= To be honest, i don’t mind telling people my pay provided i know the person well and provided the way the person asked is OK.

But in the end, i don’t see a point of comparing. If i want to check whether I’m underpaid, i will ask my headhunters/recruiters. They know the job market better than anyone and their information is more reliable than other sources.

To finish this blog post off (i’m down with flu…yea yea..i’m sick again… so i won’t be able to produce any comic today), i’ll show you another conversation between me and my ex-unimate few years back:

S: Yo Alvin, long time no see!

Me: Hi.

S: Mind if i ask you how much you’re earning?

Me: Er…why?

S: Because i think i am underpaid.

Me: Everybody thinks so. I can tell you lo, nothing much, RM 2.3k per month only.

S: Wah.. so low ah…i thought i’m underpaid at RM 3k….Nothing la, never mind liao. Byebye.

Customers need respect, not lies

with 5 comments

Ever came across a shop with a big SALES signboard outside but when you entered the shop, most of the sales items are those old and unwanted items…..and all the other items are either fixed price…or have 10% discount.

True, even 5% discount is still considered discount. It is still considered as SALES but is this what the customers are expecting? I don’t think so especially if the shops put up signs like “UP TO 70% OFF!” or “STOCK CLEARANCE!”.

You might say that the customers should be smart enough to notice the “wordings”, but that’s not the point. As someone who provides value to the customers, you should respect your customers and not trying to cheat your customers. Customers nowadays are not stupid anymore and with so many other options to choose from, why should they choose someone who tries to cheat them?

Learn from companies like ISETAN and JUSCO. They are the few companies which repay their members with generous discounts – they never let the customers down (maybe they did on few occasions, but most of the time, they didn’t). That’s why whenever we see shop A having “SALES”…..you don’t see people rushing over like whenever ISETAN or JUSCO is having “SALES”.

Just my opinion. :)

So, make your customers trust and respect you.

Me and my colleague found a credit card in the car park area. It was a gold card…a valid gold card. What i did was to bend the card into half n threw it into the big rubbish bin. At least, it won’t fall into the wrong hands. Destroy it. At least the person can report loss and get a new card.

And fortunately, the owner wasn’t near me when i was destroying the card. :P
