Have we really become so corrupted?
A friend of mine recently told me about his experience in China. He was hanging out with some China university graduates and it was quite a shocking experience for him. Why? It’s because of the mindset. To most of the people there, money is the number 1 thing in the world. Without money, you have no dignity……you have no value.
Maybe he’s just joking with us, but I do believe that the “joke” is somehow relevant and true not just in China but in most of the countries in Asia.
Let me ask you a question. Ever notice those blood donation campaign or those shout for help via sms-es or emails? How many people actually go for those things? Not many right? What if the blood donation campaign or the person who needs help from people offer RM 100 per person? I am sure there will be a lot of people lining up.
What about the search for those missing people? How many actually bother to call up when they in fact know something? Maybe they are afraid someone might come after them later? But what if the reward for any useful information is RM 10000?
Last time, most people judge others based on who they are, what they are………but now……some people start to judge people by what kind of branded stuff they are wearing, what car they are driving, what job they are having or how many properties do they have.
Materials materials and materials…….money money and money………. Have we really become so corrupted because of them? Have we lost our moral values because of them? Why do people start killing each other and hurt each other due to money?
Having money is important to survive…….but it’s not the only thing you will need to survive. At least, that’s what i feel and that’s also what I want myself to believe.
p/s…. i know things might just become worse since the recession is near….but let us all hope that it’ll be a short one

Everyone loves money. Then they got to decide how much their love to money..hahhaa
I was in China recently and saw the same thing too. Despite all the boasting of our thousand-year heritage, we Asians are a shallow and selfish people. That’s a fact. Our mentality never matured past the great famines of the north. So traumatized were our forefathers that we’re raised to worry about our stomachs first. Money’s not the problem to me. Its insatiable greed. Add that to famine mentality and this is the result.
There is a word for mindless drones seeking valuable resources. Its called a virus.
I think it is a norm for the first generation of communist who are free from communism to love $. You see it from Russians, Eastern Europeans , North Koreans and other communist countries people to get greedy about $.
But once these nations get rich, their 2nd and 3rd generation will become so complacent that they don’t understand why is $ important because their society is so wealthy, money become so relative.
Chinese people have suffered great loss through natural disaster, foreign invasion and etc… But, they are resilience people. Once Chinese catch up with American GDP, you will see their next generation less “kang cheong” about $ but now, China is still a country full of poor people, the poor and rich gap is too huge, not like in the US, we , the middle class make up most of our economy, and we generally enjoy a higher living standard compare to most middle class in most Asian countries…

I agree with Jamy to some extent but there are some examples to the contrary. The communities in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, etc have been in capitalist mode for 2-3 generations and are enjoying high GDPs. But the mindless greed for money has not subsided has it. They just get smarter at getting money.
@keeyit
of coz everybody loves money. even those who have been in very bad situation due to money…still love money. funny right? haha
@Ronnie
i think asians tend to think more of materials n money because of our culture and the way our environment brought us up. maybe thats why those people who lined up 3 hours just to get into gucci warehouse sales…….and those people who carry LV bags all over the place…80% of them are asians.
and they need a lot of $$$$$$$$ to get those stuff.
also, asians tend to think big cars and big houses or the number of properties, are a symbol….a social status, rather than as investments.
@Jamy
i must agree that those countries are quite poor…the gap btw rich n poor is too wide. maybe thats why the poor got humiliated somehow and money becomes the number 1 thing to them….in order not to be humiliated.
but i blif, that’s just part of the reason. as Ronnie has pointed out, even countries like Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong are having the same mindset. Malaysia too.
typically, chinese people, are more nervous about $$. or if it’s not bout money, then maybe it’s more about “benefits”.
ever heard of people saying “what is it in for me?” when you ask someone for a favor?
