Wordpress Upgrade IS Quite Tiring
PHEWWW it’s finally done. I’ve been spending my Saturday and Sunday on Wordpress upgrade. My previous blog was corrupted…..the plugins stopped to work….the stats gone…everything went haywired. Then I finally decided to upgrade to the latest 2.3.1 2.3.2 Wordpress.
It’s not an easy feat. I should’ve done the proper blog renaming and migration beforehand but I didn’t. So now I have to restart my STATS from 0…….my Alexa from 0 (unavoidable even if I did move the blog address properly…but well, it’s the same domain, so not that bad)…..my comments in a total mess (thus you can see Cirnelle with the latest comment instead of Jamy)…..my previous postings are not associated with any categories.
It’s just too tedious due to the change in database structure. I exported the DB SQL script but the table structures have changed. I can no longer import straight in. I did a lot of manual modifications to the script in order to get my older posts back and also the comments (600 of them).
Been spending too much time on this so I finally gave up on the post-link-to-category kind of thing.
On a positive note, the new Wordpress is very cool with a lot of cool plugins which were not available towards the end of last year. A lot of Web 2.0 and AJAX-enabled plugins. If you notice, there’s a page called Alvea Artwork where you can browse my sketches using Javascript-enabled popup.
Also, there’s the wonderful theme I am using here which allows you to change the backdrop (unless you disable cookie in your browser).
Feel free to play around the new blog. In the future, I think I can post my comic here….mmm…still thinking about it.
p/s…. if you found out any problems with this new blog. Please let me know via e-mail, or just drop a comment here. Thanks!

Why didn’t you just upgrade to 2.3.2? since it’s the latest release.
@Moses Francis
Oops…it’s 2.3.2 LOL. My bad. Oh, and thanks for visiting
i really like your theme.
Alvin,
It is very nice theme you got here.
Worth the work.

@IcedNyior
Your theme is quite nice too.
Thanks
@Jamy
Thanks Jamy
Wait, you upgraded from 2.3.2 from what version of Wordpress?
To my knowledge, upgrading is a piece of cake. It just takes time before hand to work all the bugs out and usually what I do is that I have a sandbox site (because I also test Alpha and Beta versions of Wordpress) where I can update my blog without using my live blog.
Once I’ve worked all the kinks there, which most of them involved plugins. I just update my blog and make the necessary changes without hunting them down.
There is a problem with your theme though. One is that your background picture repeats itself under 1280×1024 resolution. Second and this really isn’t a problem is that it takes a while for all the images to load on your site slowing it down. It makes it all pretty and all, but personally I’m one for content, not just how pretty the site looks.
Also quick mashup again. A lot of your background pictures make it hard to read your words. There is a lot of colour going around and it doesn’t blend that well making readability tiring after a while. You might want to tweak that a bit. Eat you own dogfood if you understand that design term. That’s what I usually do after I work on my themes.
Wow!! Nice. Very cool. SO what pix is in the background?? A tiger?? I just can see a close up shot of an eye.
@Edrei
whoa, very nice feedbacks. appreciate it. thanks a lot.
here are my opinions
i upgraded from version 2.0+. My installation was done towards the end of Aug 2007. My laptop doesn’t have any PHP stuff built in. i already hv a lot of java junks and ruby junks. don wan to have another php stuff added in.
furthermore, my connection frmo the uk to my host in malaysia is very very very slow. took me few hours to remove the wordpress and also to transfer the clean copy over.
maybe my upgrade is too big a different..thats why even the db structures are different. some tables no longer exist.
mm, about the wallpaper,i’m not sure whats the proper resolution. it looks fine for my 1280 x 800. will try it out when i have time on weekends.
and i agree with the slowing down part.
different people different opinion i guess. some would prefer eye-catching stuff than just content. it’s the WOW-effect to make a good first impression for the non-techie.
anyway, i intend to change themes every now and then since i’m sticking to the 2 column part. might change to a more professional looking and “Clean” theme.
the background pictures came with the theme itself. so far, i’ve browsed thru all of them and they seemed to be ok for me. that’s why i didnt change anything. some other themes, u cannot read at all. for this, i think the wordings are quite ok.
i think there are some “lighter” background up there for you to choose from? the forest 1 looks ok.
@seaqueen00
i din make them. hahaha. i prefer the pic of the sky + cloud, and also the forest.
looks more peaceful to me.
yeap. close up shot. but the pic is from the theme
