Don’t you think so? I donno why, but to me, our world used to be a safer place (excluding the world war thingy). But now, everywhere we go, there’s a certain level of insecurity among ourselves. What if after this corridor, there’s someone waiting to rob us? What if i’m sleeping halfway, and the robber just come into my house? What if my children get kidnapped? What if my daughter becomes a victim of a stalker?
There are so many murder, rape, robbery (and others) cases happening around us….regardless of where you are now – be it in the States, Malaysia, Canada, France, Australia or UK. If you don’t believe me, try to flip through the pages of your local papers. Boy shot his dad….or dad & uncle raped his own daughter.
Did these kind of cases happen 20 years ago? Or i was too ignorant at that time to notice? Or i’m not imagining things, these cases ARE increasing….together with suicide cases.
Many people are so concerned about terrorism after the 911 incident….and many have neglected other form of security. People should start looking inside their home, than just looking for intrusion from outside.
I donno what else to say actually but i’m quite sad that our world is turning to be in this state. I still remember, 20 years ago, my parents would allow me to go out and walk alone (around the neighborhood). But now, i seriously doubt it is safe for a small 5 years old boy to walk alone outside.
And it’s really not pleasant…to keep asking your female friends to bring pepper spray with them….and to be careful with driving alone at night. This world is no longer what it used to be.
Well….let’s hope that everything will turn out for the better (and safer) so that we won’t have to worry so much about our own safety when walking on the street.
p/s….one thing good about UK is that their police force is quite efficient. At least, people will feel safer with a proper police force looking after them. But for Malaysia… ?

Hi Alvin,
I think the problems here are many. Collapse of community certainly leads to more crime, but even worse than this is a pervasive media which provides us with information of these crimes.
Hence, whilst crime may well BE higher, our appreciation of it is higher still. And because we feel it is endemic, when we go out we are more wary, which makes us smell more of a victim in the making, making it more likely that a crime will be committed.
A bit of a vicious circle.
@Anthony
yeap. i was planning to say something about the media…how the media is showing more to us than before, which is a good thing because it makes us more aware of our surroundings…. and we need that to protect ourselves at times.
mm, i don think being wary is a bit thing. true, some people are becoming TOO worried about things and end up becoming like a paranoid. but there are a lot of people who are not wary…and they ended up becoming the victims.
If you dont mind me saying, Malaysian police forces are efficient too .. by having teh tarik =)
In certain countries the practices are just too ridiculous. If you let your kids outside without an adult’s company your neighbor can call the police and you can get into trouble. To tell you the truth I feel very safe in my city, I was not constantly being alert or holding on to my bag. As for the terrorist..hmm…I just pray for world peace.
@melvin
just read the news that 2 police officers got seriously wounded after a shootout which killed a robber.
so…not all police personnels are tat bad. there are still some who are willing to risk their lives.
some…maybe 10-20%?
@Bee Ean
sometimes i do wonder…….are people getting too paranoid or is it a good thing to be that careful? i just noticed that public places in london……there’s no rubbish bin. then i remember…it’s not good to have rubbish bins because people can just put anything inside.
yea, let’s pray for world peace!
